Analysis of Sustainable Tourism Development Strategies in Iraq: Prospects and Challenges Towards Achieving Economic Development
Main Article Content
Abstract
Abstract. This research addresses the importance of tourism as a strategic industry that contributes to economic and social development, no longer limited to being merely a recreational activity. It focuses on the reality of the tourism sector in Iraq and the numerous challenges it has faced, such as weak planning and government policies, wars, economic sanctions, and deteriorating infrastructure. These factors have led to a decline in tourism activity despite Iraq possessing significant tourist, archaeological, and religious attractions. The research aims to analyze strategies for developing sustainable tourism in Iraq and demonstrate its role in supporting economic development, while also identifying the most important opportunities and obstacles hindering the sector's growth. The research employs a descriptive-analytical approach, examining the current state of tourism in Iraq, analyzing available tourism resources and the challenges facing the sector, and exploring future visions for sustainable tourism development. The research arrives at several conclusions, most notably that Iraq possesses diverse tourism assets that qualify it to be an attractive tourist destination. The most important recommendation is the development of a comprehensive national strategy for sustainable tourism development in Iraq.
